How to Read a Thread Count
- 40S: yarn count
- The fineness of a single strand. Higher numbers mean finer yarn: 60S is fine, 20S is thick.
- /2: ply
- How many strands are twisted together. A 3-ply thread (/3) is stronger and thicker than 2-ply of the same count.
- How to choose
- Light fabrics: 50S/2, 60S/2. Everyday garments: 40S/2. Denim, bags and heavy fabrics: 20S/2, 20S/3.

Frequently Asked Questions
What do 40S/2 and 20S/3 mean?
The number before S is the yarn count of the single strand: the higher the number, the finer the yarn. The number after the slash is how many strands are twisted together. So 40S/2 is two strands of 40-count yarn, and 20S/3 is three strands of the thicker 20-count yarn.
Which thread count should I choose?
For most garments, 40S/2 is the standard choice. For light fabrics and shirts, choose 50S/2 or 60S/2. For denim, bags and heavy fabrics, choose 20S/2 or 20S/3. Tell us your fabric and machine and we will recommend a spec.
Can you match my colors?
Yes. Send us a Pantone number, a color card reference or a physical sample, and we will dye to match it for your order.
Can you make specs or cone sizes that are not in the table?
Yes. We also produce 30S/2 and other counts, and can wind custom cone weights and lengths for bulk orders.
Do you send samples?
Yes. Contact us with the counts and colors you need and we will arrange samples so you can test them on your own machines.
How is the thread packed and shipped?
Cones are packed in export cartons, and we can palletize for container loading. We ship by sea, air or express to buyers worldwide.
